Problem
A one-day online developer event has a credibility problem before it starts. Developers have sat through enough vendor webinars to know what a day of a silicon company talking about its own silicon is worth.
Solution
I handed the programme to the Innovators. MATRIX Labs on voice recognition, OpenMV on low-power deep learning, 96Boards and miniNodes on a solar-powered edge workstation, MbientLab on an open-source pick-and-place machine, Acutronic on robotics, with Chris Anderson of 3DR and Rand Hindi of Snips on the panels. Hackster.io ran it with us, free to attend.
I opened with the keynote and then got out of the way.
Analysis
Every speaker was an engineer teaching something they had built themselves on Arm. That is what the Innovator Program was for, and it is why the day worked when a vendor webinar with the same agenda would not have.
Going free and online removed the two filters that usually decide who attends a hardware event: a travel budget and a timezone.
Result
More than 10,000 live streams and over 2,000 developers reached, across machine learning, voice, computer vision, edge compute and robotics.
